The Opera Romeo and Juliet

Charles Gounod’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is set in fourteenth-century Verona, just like Shakespeare’s play. The show opens with a prologue where you will get a rundown of the story of Romeo and Juliet. The prologue is full of foreshadowing and gives you an idea of what is to come in this tale of forbidden love.

Then, you will watch five acts. The first act takes place at a costume party hosted by Juliet’s father. Romeo and some of his friends crash the party, but because they’re wearing costumes, no one realizes they are Montagues. That’s until Romeo and Juliet have a love at first sight moment and Romeo reveals himself.

Act 2 contains the balcony scene. This is the most well-known scene in Romeo and Juliet, and it has possibly the best duet in the entire opera.

In Act 3, the action turns up a notch. Romeo and Juliet get married, but their families aren’t feeling the love. The families battle it out, and Mercutio dies. Romeo avenges the death and ends up banished from Verona.

Act 4 brings the emotion. Romeo bids ado to his love, and Juliet’s father has arranged a marriage. Of course, she already has a husband, so she seeks out a potion to commit suicide.

Just in case Act 4 wasn’t emotional enough, you’ll find yourself tearing up during Act 5. You already know the story of the star-crossed lovers, but the score makes it more emotional. You will find yourself urging Romeo to wait for Juliet to wake up instead of killing himself, but it will be all for naught. It’s written in the stars.
