Two years ago, the city of Pensacola came up with an amazing idea. What if they made the downtown area bright with holiday cheer by adding half a million lights into the mix? The city plotted out a spot from Garden Street on Palafox to Plaza de Luna, strung up the lights, and the First City Lights Festival was born. The lights are burning bright downtown now and will be through Jan. 13, 2019.
The lights are absolutely stunning, but that’s just half the story. You never know what might pop up during the First City Lights Festival.
So Much Holiday Cheer
While some people just stroll down Palafox to enjoy the canopy of lights, there is so much more to do. The lights set the perfect backdrop for the holidays, and the entertainment comes out in full force. Street performers show off their skills, and pop-up operas have been known to wow the crowds. You might even catch a performance of “The Nutcracker” as you walk along the First City of Lights Festival. Then, there’s the caroling. Groups of carolers often wander along Palafox, and between the lights and the music, you will feel like you’ve been whisked away to a magical wonderland.
Oh, and don’t forget to bring your kids along. Santa has been known to make an appearance. He likes the lights as much as you do, so he’ll occasionally head to Palafox and take some photos with the kids. Make sure your kids pack their lists with them when you attend the First City of Lights Festival. They never know when they might have to hand it over.

Here’s another cool part about the First City Lights Festival. When you walk along the streets admiring the lights, you will be right next to local businesses. You can do a little shopping, stop by a gallery, or even grab a drink with your friends. It’s a great way to explore the city.
